Well my parents did that to me and I turned out fine... and other arguments that don't make sense!

 I just get SO FRUSTRATED reading reply after reply where seemingly smart moms use completely illogical arguements. Does this get to anyone else?

 

"My mom did that to me and I turned out fine..." Well, so what? How can you deny science with this lame explanation? People have lived through abuse and turned out fine, so does that mean abuse is ok? Woman have smoked and drinked through pregnancies and had healthy babies, does that mean it's ok to do these things? So why is it ok to put babies to sleep on their tummies, let our kids ride without seatbelts, or to spank our children just because we lived though those things? Doesn't it count for anything that experts have PROVEN these things to be harmful? Gosh this burns me!!

 

"I don't go by what I read, I go by my own experience..." Well that's pretty close minded. Unless your own experience includes studies and experiments that prove a theory. I mean in some countries the rulers don't allow the people to read because reading is knowledge and knowledge is power. How can one experience everything there is to know? How can you deny truth?

 

"Well according to the Bible..." OK I know I am going to get burned for this one. Don't get me wrong, I am not putting down religion here, it's just that the Bible is an ancient text that is interpretted in thousands of different ways. For every person who uses the Bible to prove their point, there is a person who can use that same Bible to prove the exact opposite. This is just not a convincing argument!!

 

People can think of a million ways to deny truth. It is almost scary!! One person says "Here are a hundred studies that all prove X!" and then a hundred people will say, "Oh I don't think that's true..." and use one of the argumetns above. I am not saying we need to believe everything we read, on the contrary, that is just as closed minded as illogical arguements, but we need to put some stock in studies and science. It is why we have expert researchers to find these things out for us. Does this get to anyone else? I don't even repsond to people like this anymore because I get so mad, and there is really nothing you can say to convince them. They are so stubborn!!
