Bottom line: is it ok for an out of uniform off duty police officer to pull out a gun without showing his badge when a personal altercation gets a tiny bit out of hand?

No it's not ok. What was going the pregnant woman do? knock him out with the belly? This happened at the walmart by my house...

I think it should absolutely not be ok. He is not on duty, his action in waving around a firearm without identifying himself as a police officer could have had tragic consequences, say if another jumpy customer with a gun of their own thought they needed to open fire.

of course not but I really wish people would stop using "pregnant" couple.  I doubt he could tell that

Depends on if he felt he was in danger. A civilian can pull a gun out without showing their concealed carry permit if they needed to protect themselves.

He should intervene but pulling out a gun isn't something that should be taken lightly.

I always thought cops were only supposed to use them as a last resort or if they felt they were in danger. That cop was not in danger.

It depends on the situation. There is no "bottom line" IMO.

I wouldn't believe some over zealous guy with a gun is a officer without seeing a badge just on his says so.

No, that is not ok. He should have said he was a cop 1st thing.
