I got my daughter the 3ds for her birthday. You can use regular games with it. GameStop told me that they are going to eventually stop making games for the regular one. Not sure if that is true or not. The 3ds was only 20 bucks more.

We got a 3DS for Christmas. I love that you can get Netflix on it and that the regular DS games can be played on it.

but you don't have to have it on. There is an off switch for the 3d effect

They are only making games for the 3DS now, which sucks. I love my DSi! I wouldn't get either for a four year old though. It seems like a lot of money for something they might not play with often, when the next best thing is going to be unveiled in a year or so. It hasn't done well with sales, which is why the price was reduced so fast.
If you do get him one, look at GameStop for a used 3DS, they're still in good working condition, less expensive and you get great deals on games if you join the power up rewards program. Hope this helps!

Neither, I do not see how those little tiny screens can be good for their eyes. I like my sons vision and will not allow him to have something like that.

ugh!  Really?  Doofball sales guy didn't mention that.   My kids played the demo for a few minutes & got headaches & dizzy.. So I said no way to that one.  Well maybe there will be another awesome sale on them soon.
