First All Women Nuclear Alert
First All Women Nuclear Alert

October 1962, the United States of America and the Soviet Union participated in a 14-day standoff that would forever change the world. The Soviet Union lined the coastal regions of Cuba with nuclear weapons and the United States stood up A-01, 10th Strategic Missile Squadron, Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana-America's first nuclear enterprise and former President John F. Kennedy's "...Ace in the hole."

The 10th Strategic Missile Squadron directly contributed to President Kennedy's objective of having both "...peace and freedom, here in this Hemisphere" and "around the world" by having Emergency Combat Capable Crews man A-01 and monitor A-06, the first sortie to be "Strategic Alert." During this period, Emergency Combat Capable Crews consisted solely of brave, male military personnel-a gender trend destined to be changed.

Approximately 16 years after A-01 stood up, 1 Lt Patricia Fornes, 381st Strategic Missile Wing, McConnell Air Force Base, Kansas, became the first female to pull missile alert in Strategic Air Command, the command responsible for America's nuclear weapon systems during this period. 1 Lt Fornes worked with the Titan II missile system. In 1989, more than 10 years after the first female was introduced to alert duties, 1 Lt Lea Holt, became the first female Minuteman missileer. She was stationed with the 321st Strategic Missile Squadron, F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyoming.
First All Women Nuclear Alert

After having proved numerous times that excellence is not dependent on gender, and 49 years after A-06 reported "Strategic Alert," ten females prepare to "man" an entire nuclear missile squadron for the first time in history-the very squadron the provided a beacon of hope during the Cuban Missile Crises and was referred to by President Kennedy, as previously mentioned, as his "...Ace in the hole."

These ladies will be responsible for the security, safety, maintenance, and operation (if necessary) of 50 Minuteman III missiles; billions of dollars worth of military resources.

This is no different than an all man group

They made an all women group... It's the same thing. It's not a victory.

when you choose people based on their sex it's still prejudice ,.. Men or women

IMO

They weren't purposefully making an all-female crew.  That is simply how it worked out with the recruits that were the best candidates at the time. And the article is just saying that it's kind of neat that this started with an all-male crew and it is being continued by an all-female crew.

Ha ha!  I know, right?  Especially since women who live together tend to end up on the same cycle.  They are all going to be PMSing at once!!  Wow...

Sorry to break it to you, but most of these ladies aren't actually from Wyoming, lol.  ;)  And they weren't making an all-female crew on purpose - that's just how it worked out.  But I do think it's kind of cool.  Especially since I know one of the ladies on the team.
