I am a high school history teacher. It's my planning period and during my first class this morning, which is Honor's US History, I asked the students to write down all the presidents since WWII in order. Here is a sample of what they wrote:

Abraham Lincoln
JFK
George Bush
Richard Reagan
Carter Nixon

Those were listed in that order. Lincoln led our country during WWII! The last two names aren't even real people. They put names together to create new presidents! Really? I don't know who was "teaching" these kids up until now, but they failed. However, it's also the laziness of the students. All most of them care about is the latest episode of Teen Mom and upgrading their cell phones. Aghh. Thank you for listening.

***Thank you for replying! I have to say that I don't believe we're screwed! I needed to vent! I love my students. I love what I do. Our teens today have so many distractions that most of us never had to deal with in our high school days. Cell phones, iPad, iPods, text messaging, sexting, reality shows like Jersey Shore and Teen Moms, higher rate of eating disorders, earlier drug and alcohol use, and the list goes on. That's why we teachers can't do it alone. We have to have the help from the parents. I spend 90 minutes per day with approximately 32 kids per class. I provide these kids with the tools and info. If each parent took only 20 minutes each night to discuss their child's classes, we'd have an awesome partnership. So many of you moms already do this. You are appreciated by your child's teacher.
