ok probably a stupid question. but me and my husband finally got all our w2s and are preparing to do our taxes. but are confused on what state to file in. we just made a huge move from Calif to Texas last year. we spend a majority of the year in Calif. but moved to Texas at the end of Aug. so what state do we file in?

You file in the state your in but you have to file both of your state taxes. Their should be a tax website for CA.

we trying to do it on Taxslayer.com but don't see an option for doing both. might have to play around with it for awhile. I'm a little confused on how we suppose to do it.

Texas has no state income tax but CA does, so you have to file a CA state return for income earned there.  Your Federal taxes can be filed in TX.

http://www.ftb.ca.gov/ is the CA Franchise Tax Board website. You can file your state taxes for free online through that site.

Texas has no state income tax so nothing to file there, but you need to file in California for the income you made there.

Make sure that you list yourselves as a part time resident in California, and put the dates.
