Some people don't realize that not every parent literally runs out the door as soon as their kid turns sixteen to get their license.

My parents made me have a year of insurance premiums saved before I was allowed to start driving. I was so pissed at the time but I realize now what they were trying to teach me. I didn't start driving alone until I was 17 1/2

My ds turned 18 in May and just got his license on Feb 1st...in my state he only had to complete a driving course that he took online and paid $57 for (because he was 18- they have to do driving school under that age).   He took the certificate to the DMV, paid $25 for a driving test and his license and was done.  Much better than paying $350 for driving school!

Ah, the good ole days when we had Driver's Ed. in school!  So much better!!

My stepson turns 16 next month.  He has his permit.  The school offers drivers ed and our insurnace won't go up more than 50 bucks.

I'm 34 years old, and I just got my license about a year and a half ago. It's not so terribly uncommon. :)
