How do I keep them from smoking? *Edited for more info* update :-)

I am riding to Virgina to my sister's wedding with my mom.  She is a chain smoker and very stubborn.  I think my brother is riding with us, he is a smoker as well.  My other brother and sister in law may be riding with us, they are both smokers too.  My mom may be renting a van.  Here's the thing.  I don't want mom and brother, (and maybe other brother and sister in law) to smoke in the car with me and the kids in there. I don't want all our clothes and my dress to reek of cigarette smoke when we get to my sister's house. (she's a non smoker thank God) I was sitting here thinking about 2-4 people all smoking in a small space with my kids in the car and it makes me sick.  My son's dr did put him on Albuterol as needed. It's for an undiagnosed chronic cough, not asthma.  He hardly ever needs it though. But I was thinking I could use that to keep them from smoking in the car. What do you think I should do?  My sister says my mom can't smoke in a rental.  So if she rents a van then problem solved LOL.

*If we have to rent a van, I have offered to pay half the cost of the rental. She gets a discount because she works for Enterprise.*

I talked to my mom.  She didn't sound to happy about it but she agreed to not smoke in the van.  She had plans to rent one you could smoke in.  (which bugs me because she should know by now I don't like people smoking around my kids) I explained to her that I wasn't comfortable with all that smoke being around my kids.  She didn't act like she understood, but she did agree.  I offered to help pay for gas and the rental again, hoping that she wouldn't think I was being bitchy or bossy :-)

You arent allowed to smoke in rentals but people still do. You can ask her not to and she either says ok and u go or she says no and u drive yourself.

Maybe plan on stopping every hour or so so they can smoke outisde the car.  Other than that - a haz mat suit with an oxygen tank may have to suffice.

Can't drive myself.  We have one car and my husband is staying behind because he'll be starting his new job by then (hopefully)

I wouldn't drive with them. Even if they get out every hour or so to smoke they're going to stink. I would be so sick driving in the car with them not to mention exposing the kids to that. Ishy

I think you would have a better chance of hell freezing over than to get a group of smokers to take a long drive and not smoke!

I have no advice, but good luck and I hope they do what is right and not smoke around your children.

I would find my own way there. Thats your only guarantee.

If they want to smoke why don't you ask if they pull over to smoke so its not all in the car?

That's what I've been thinking about doing,  My only other option is flying.

Hope they rent the van cause otherwise you simply dont have control over what other people do. You can ask them not to but if they are set on smoking then I don't see what you could do besides drive yourself , deal with it or stay home.

That would be the simplest way, if my mom wasn't how she is.  I think I'm going to tell her that either she doesn't smoke in the car, (I am not expecting her to not smoke at all for the whole trip) or I'm finding another way there.
