My little guy goes in next week for his vaccinations. He's 3 and hasnt had any vaccinations or other needles for that fact since he was 6 months old. I dont want him to be blind sided. He is a clever boy and it would hurt him deeply if he wasnt expecting it. We are very close and I am always open and honest with him. What can I tell him to help him prepare for the needles?? Do you know of any childrens books that touch on needles that I can pick up for him?? Any advice as to how I can prepare him would be greatly appreciated.
That being said this is not a post about whether to or not to vaccinate so dont turn it into one. I have done my research and am doing what I feel is best for my child.
I think, just being open with him is great. I don't know of any books. Since, as you said, he's a smart dude, he will feel worried and apprehensive if you are. I think, the best course of action is to be very matter of fact. Don't lie and say "it won't hurt", because it will. But, tell him, that you guys are doing this, so that he won't get sick with very dangerous diseases. That it will hurt for a little while, but it will go away. Best of luck!

This seems to have some good advice :)
i agree with this, going too in depth and spending too much time discussing it will likely make him more anxious about the appointment

Tell him he's going to the doctor and will get some shots. They will hurt for a second, but will help him stay healthy.
Our pediatrician is so great. Every single time before she sticks them, even when they were babies, she gets down to their level and says "remember, we do this because we love you and we want you to stay healthy"
we have a book that we read, its kinda boring for little ones but you can paraphrase.....its called the value of believing in yourself and its about louis pasteur developing a vaccine for rabies.....anyways, we have read this many times and it explains that the vaccine enters the body through a needle, and explains what the vaccine is designed to do. everytime we go for vaccines, we remind our dd she needs more soldiers to fight the invisible enemy (germs, lol)! :)

Yes, this. And I would act out the whole doctor's appointment with him.
I agree with both of these ladies 100%, very good advice.
