I have a 3 & a half year old daughter. She doesnt talk very clearly or use complete sentences yet. She also doesnt seem to understand things when we speak to her. She does talk and does understand certain things but only the basics. Most of her sentences consist of 2-3 words & her answer to a lot of things is always "yes" or "okay" which leads me to believe she doesnt fully understand what she is being told. On top of this she is very hyper & non-stop all day. I'm also having trouble potty training her and was worried that she may not be getting it because she may be mentally delayed or have ADHD or something.
Well I took her to her pediatrician today to express my concerns and she did say her vocabulary isnt where it should be, but that that's normal to a certain extent. After observing her for a while she said she is very hyper & would defenitely have her tested for ADHD in a year but that for now she's too young to be diagnosed. In the end she politely told me that maybe my daughter was just spoiled. I didnt take offense to it and understood what she meant by it, but honestly I dont think that's the case. I really do fear something is wrong with my daughter and I dont want to have to wait a year until her next doctors appointment to find out.
Has anyone ever been in a similar situation? Do children with ADHD learn to form complete sentences later than other children? Do they potty train later than other children, too?
My son is exactly what you.described. Though he will throw in no's, but will answer a list of questions all the same.
He has SPD and is developmentally delayed. We are in the process of further developmental or autism testing.
Edit: (sorry phone went out). My son saw a psychiatrist who diagnosed him with ADHD, developmental delay and symptoms of ASD. My son is 3 - at that age I think most "have" ADHD. His recommendationswas to put my son on medications, which I politely told him no. I am dealing with a developmental pediatrician for further testing.
Just be careful with getting her tested for anything, some docs just want to label, medicate, and ship out the door.
He had a lot of signs that made me ask questions. He just graduated from speech therapy, but still does physical and occupational.
I'm not sure how far behind ADHD children are in potty training and such. But you could start by introducing at least three to five words a day to your DD. This is how i am teaching my 1.5 yr old to talk. The words today were Chip (her dogs name), toe, please (or peas), and book.
At least once every half hour i bring her dog to her and say "chip", then tell her to say it. She usually wont the first or second time trying. But she gets it. Then i would grab her toes and say "toe" and she would eventually get it by the end of the day. Just an idea or method you could try. Good luck.
Some toddlers are just hyper and some take longer to potty train.
Honestly, don't try to put a lable on her unless you have to. At this point, just see where she goes.
If you are really concerned, you can contact you local school and have her evaluated. If she needs anything like speech therapy, they can tell you and help you.
take her to an ent. my child is doing exactly what your describing and he has ear issues. and mine is the same age not potty trained either. and sometimes he still looks at me stupid when I tell him something, or he does something I didn't tell him to do like he doesn't understand what he is being told.

I googled SDP, but I dont think that's what my daughter has.
To be completely honest I am not too familiar with Autism. But I thought kids with Autism didnt talk at all? I could be wrong though since like I said I dont know too much about Autism.

I would seek out a possible autism issue.
Im just wondering if Autism is something that her pediatrician would have mentioned if my daughter was showing any of the symptoms?
I'll have to do some more research for sure.
But there is a lot more to it. Google PPD-NOS.
