We just joined the ranks of the unemployed.

DH got laid off today.  His company downsized about 30%.  I'm stuck somewhere between shock and panic.  He'll be getting 2 months salary as a severance, but considering all that we're going to have to do in that time, it won't go very far at all.  We've always been pretty tight with money, as we just made ends meet to begin with.  We either need to find someone to sublet the apartment, or come up with the $2700 to break the lease.  And I'm going to have to pay the $200 to kill my cell phone contract.  Unless he finds a job in the next couple weeks - which considering he's been looking for a new job for the past 3 years, is highly unlikely - we're going to be moving to NY to live with my mom (we're currently in MD).  I just don't know what the hell to do at the moment.  Thank god I breastfeed, huh?  Shit.

I'm so sorry. That happened to us a couple years ago. We went from living off six figures to living off unemployment. It sucked bad, but we made it. We had to give up a lot, lost a vehicle, had to move, but it's do able. Good luck hun, hope you guys find work soon.

I'm sorry. Don't lose hope, though, and don't expect the worst. Things usually have a way of working out, and for all you know, this may be a blessing in disguise. Maybe he'll get an even better job. Either way, you're not alone...many people are going through the same thing. I know it must be scary, though. I wish your family the best of luck.

((HUGS))

We went through this in late 2007 when the economy first tanked in CA before it affected the rest of the country. It was rough. It took my DH 4 months to find a job and we have to move for it. He spent hours upon hours searching for a job. He treated it like a full time job. He'd wake up and hop on the computer searching and searching and applying. All day. My oldest was less than a year so I know how you feel.

Save everything you can. Make sure your DH applies for unemployment. You guys will be fine. :)

Thanks.  We always knew in the back of our minds it was a possibility, just never really expected it.  I am not prepared for this.

Talk to your landlord. Sometimes they will make exceptions and waive the fees in situations like this.

I would love that.  I'm doubtful because it's a large property management company.  It's worth a try though.

Thanks.  I think part of what's so frustrating is that he's been trying to get out of that company for the last 3 years and get something better, but where we live is so expensive, and none of the companies are willing to pay a salary that matches the cost of living.  Or, anything that would require us moving, isn't willing to help pay for relocation costs.  He had an amazing prospect a few months ago, that would've covered everything for us, and was looking like the dream job, and it was narrowed down between DH and another person, but we never heard back.
