Do you think bullying has become such a huge deal because we (as a society) have stopped teaching our kids to be nice?
Or do you think bullying has become such a huge deal because we (as a society) have stopped raising our children to have even moderately thick skin?
I honestly don't know where I stand on the issue. I was picked on in school for having freckles, and when I was older I was picked on for being pale (I don't tan, I burn). None of it made me depressed or suicidal.....but I was taught from a young age not to give any mind to people who have mean things to say.
I can really see both points of view though....what do you think?
I think being picked on for having freckles is WAY different than what our kids are dealing with nowadays. Of course you're not going to be suicidal over being called freckle-face or ghost, just like I was not suicidal over being the jolly green giant. It's completely different.
I was teased for my thighs, ass, teeth, hairy arms, eyes (they're different colors), and all kinds of shit. I was not suicidal but it hurt after 6 years of it.
I think bullying is an issue because everyone compares themselves to fucking Kim Kardashian... so if you don't look like a model, you're suddenly fat, ugly, etc.
Also bullying is an issue because IMO, parents don't teach compassion and empathy.
I think this might be part of what confuses me the most. The "reasons" for bullying.
How on Earth is your daughter losing a good friend a reason for her to be bullied?!?!? How did the kids justify it, if they did at all?
Quoting Kylie819:
My daughter was bullied and mocked because a good friend of hers passed away. The kids who tormented her were cruel little monsters. In her particular case it was nasty kids, not a lack of thick skin.
I do think it's different now, it's harder for kids to get away from it. Now they are harassed on-line and through texts. It's more relentless.
