I owned one for awhile. The more you handle them, the less scared they are. Mine used to "puuuurrr" like a cat, lol.

Regular, GENTLE handling. They need an hour of interaction a day.

Guinea pigs actually don't walk around in their poo. They pick corners of the cage & make it their "toilet". They also do not stink.

This. They are such sweet animals once they are used to you. They are great pets, but they do need to be cuddled and loved. They aren't like mice that tend to do ok with less interaction.

Gently hold them and love them. I used to take ours out at night and recline on the sofa with her on my belly. Sometimes she would just flop down and watch TV (she was particularly fond of criminal minds and would squeak to get out and watch it, so funny) and sometimes she would wander up and down my body. Once they are used to gentle adult handling you can introduce the kids. Of course they should still be gentle but sometimes they're not great at holding the piggies or they get over excited so it's best to get the piggies used to quiet adult interaction first.

We used to have them when I was a kid... they were so sweet. they just need to be handled regularly so they can get used to you. I love the noises they make and the way they talk to each other but it can get a little annoying at night :)

1 mom liked this

It is best if you, or an older child, take them in and out of the cage for a while.  The best way to get them out is this.....
Put your hand in the cage so that the piggies scoot to an open area (not near their food dish or beds/hiding places, etc.
Carefully grab them toward the middle of thei bodies....a little toward the back half (this is about where their center of gravity is.  USE ONE HAND...that way they can't reach your arm with their legs and push off to get away.
Careuflly lift them off the ground...again so they can't grip anything and get away.  Slowly guide them through the opening of the cage without letting them get their legs close enough to anything to push off.

It does take time...but they will get more used to being picked up as time goes on...though they will almost always try to escpae from being picked up....just the way they are.

We have the SWEETEST piggy right now.  He is about 8 months old....we've had him for about 2 months now.  She loves to cuddle....especially by climbing up on your shoulder/into your  hair!  LOL

He's also 'mute'....the only sound he ever makes is to purr...which is awesome and has made even the piggy-unfriendly members of our house like him.  :-)
