My kids are amazing!

my daughter has all A's and a B that's almost an A. She always has had grades like that.. however on her "benchmark" she is at 61 in reading she always has been behind in reading
Anyway in April is state tests and she has to be a 75 to pass and if she doesn't they will hold her back. Soo frustrating. So now I need to somehow get her to be able to make a 75 when she's always been a little slow in reading but otherwise she's doing beautifully!!

Basically she needs to read as much as she can in one minute.

It's just so frustrating because of this new law my state passed ( reading sufficiency act) she has to be where the state said she should be or they hold them back.

Yea - they had that sort of thing when jays was a kid too.

In NJ he actually has to pass a test in order to graduate - which for us means YUCK he's horrible at testing although he maintains all A's and B's and a C here and there.

He passed every part except English - its his worse subject.

English was my fav! I struggled with math.

My daughter has always been "behind" in reading. Always. She comprehends what She reads it's just not the speed they want her at.

What are they going to do make her repeat third grade until she gets a 75? If she isn't a fast reader, she isn't a fast reader, kwim?

They will work it out, Im sure she will get better soon it just takes practice and if they have pinpointed the issue = then they can help fix it.

What's the test like?  It sounds like it's just a testing issue if she is doing well in other areas.  Why don't some teachers (schools) use common sense?

EDIT- Just read about the state law.  If it's speed, just practice practice practice.  Time her.  I know our students have to read so many words a minute in 3rd grade.  It's not a state test though.  Our state tests are more comprehensive.

Yea her issue is she takes each word so slow.

They want her to just read over the words she knows. Because that is the timed part and not so much to do with comprehension. I make her read nightly. I time her. She gets tutored every night of the week as well. She sees a speech therapist because there is a delay and a reading specialist. I don't know what more We can do at this point.

We have a testing system like that, but it is not required to pass a grade. My dd is sometimes on grade and depending on the reading passage she can also fall behind. I think it is dumb because it does not tell whether a child can comprehend what they read and my dd had really bad anxiety from it. They send passages home to read in 1 min and she would freak for not getting 100 words.
