HELP! yeast infection or staph infection under foreskin??? ****UPDATE****

well the boil returned this morning (with a vengence) so i took him to the er and got a script for antibiotics for the absess.  the er doctor was kind of a prick about it but i just put my foot down and demanded the medication....  thanks to everyone for the advise and hopefully my son will finally start getting better!

so my son woke up today, and when i changed his diaper i noticed the tip of his penis looked red.  when i pulled his foreskin back (he is circed) he had a boil right under the head of his penis where the shaft begins.  i thought it might be smegma (sp?) so i tried to wash it which was when i noticed that it was a boil that had come to a head.  all i had to do was touch it and a big white head popped out.....by this time my little man was screaming so i put him in a warm bath and a afterward a clean diaper.  the next time i went to change his diaper his penis had swelled up about 3 times the normal size and he was grabbing at his crotch screaming in pain.  my doctor got me in right away and when i took off his diaper and showed him he didnt even touch my son to exam him, he just glanced down and said "thats a yeast infection".

i tried explaining to him how he had a boil on his nipple a week prior and that he had been exposed to my FIL who has an antibiotic resistant staph infection about 10 days prior and he blew me off saying that there was no way he would have caught a staph infection.  he told me to apply anti-fungal cream after every diaper change for 5 days and if it didnt clear up to reschedule.

i am just unsure of what to do....part of me thinks i should wait and see if it clears up but the other part of me feels like this is NOT a yeast infection and i should take him to another pediatrician.  my old ped was so wonderful and this is someone who i am just unsure of....and although i know i am not a doctor my intuition tells me something else is going on here.

what should i do???

1 mom liked this
If you're not comfortable with what your doctor told you, then take him and get a second opinion.

Pretty simple.

If it were me I would take him into the ER and be very demanding about a test to rule out staph. Listen to your instincts on this.

Ok, my husband is a carrier of staph. He gets them every couple months and my daughter has even had one, right beside her rectum (she was 2). My husbands Mom is also a carrier. Aytime that my husband gets around her, he has a staph pop up days later.

IF this is staph, it definetly needs to be treated. I think it would be best for you to get a 2nd opinion, because I know how bad they can get.

when my son had a yeast infection as an infant it was NOTHING like you described - more like a super diaper rash with raised skin

I would def go see another doctor.Call your insurance explain that you want a second opinion

like a culture?  would they just swab the area to test?  why wouldnt his doctor have done this to rule out something like staph?

sorry for all the questions....my son has never been sick in his life minus a few colds so i am new to how this all works :(

If you think it could be staph, go get it checked.

I agree with you. That does not seem like just a yeast infection. I would be taking him to another dr. or even the er. If it is staph, it can get much worse really fast.

see this is what i thought....my son had a diaper rash from hell at 6 months...nothing would get rid of it.  it covered his whole peri-area and was raised and raw.  i spoke with a pharmacist who told me he thought it was yeast based and gave me an athletes foot creme to use and it went away with 24 hours.  this doesnt look anything like that, it only under his foreskin and is so red it almost looks bloody :(

When I took my daughter to the Dr. and told her that my husband is a carrier, she didn't do any of that. She loked at it and said "yep, that's staph"

I don't know if a person can really tell from just glancing for about 2 seconds, or maybe she came to that opinion based on what I told her. You should definetly get a 2nd opinion.
