Cheese sandwiches to the kids who don't pay for lunch.

I was just reading a school newsletter. In elementary school if a kid doesn't pay for their lunch, they just get charged. Most end up not paying and it costs anywhere from $60,000-$70,000 a year!!!

So the school board decided to have cheese sandwiches on hand if the kid didn't have money. Well they are taking that back because parents are throwing hissy fits about their kid not getting a hot lunch and its degrading. bla bla bla.

Honestly I don't see HOW they are complaining! They don't pay for it. If money was really that bad for them then they would get free lunch. They can either pay 1.25 a day or pack their kid their own lunch like most parents have to!

I mean damn, $60,000 is salary for TWO teachers. Another option is the charges on their account follows them up until high school and if they don't pay it, they don't get their diploma. That's what they do in the high schools when a student fails to return a text book or library book.

So what would your solution to this be?

I don't understand people. I mean seriously, if you can't afford lunches for you kid, chances are you qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Over my dead body would I ever not pay for my kid to eat or not have a lunch from home. Lunch her is $2.60 per day, per kid. I have 3 in school.

I think the cheese sandwich idea was reasonable.

I bet the parents that complain are the ones that pay late. I say attack a credit card to the account.

I wouldn't do sandwiches since you don't know what the kid can have or not have as far as allergies. I would though hand out fruit. No kid is allergic to a banana and an apple. Plus those 2 fruits have more nutrition then any hot,  frozen, over processed lunch warmed up in an oven crap

I thought so too. The child is fed, that should be the main concern. And lunch is cheap here compared to where you live! It's 1.25 for elementary kids.  Also I heard it's very easy to qualify for free or reduced lunch. You can't get much cheaper than 1.25 though..honestly.

They have done this for years here. The kids have the ability to go in debt like $6 with letters, reminders, and phone calls before it happens though.

Being that kid who had to eat the cheese sandwiches it is embarassing and it is degrading. My parents were divorced and my dad was no help at all and my mom did not qualifly for free or reduced lunch for us kids and could only afford lunch for 2 of us so me and my sister who is 2 years younger then me decided that the younger 2 would get the hot lunch and we would be embarassed and eat a plain cheese sandwich

I think that the cheese sandwich shouldn't be an option until a child has missed so many days. I think that they should be given the benefit of the doubt... sometimes, somebody truly forgets.

Some parents are clueless... I have a neighbor addicted to pills and I personally took her to the school office and made her, make sure her kids were going to get free lunch. If I had not done this the free lunch thing would never had happened and her kids would have been hungry.

The cafeteria has a list of allergy kids and will accommodate as necessary based on their needs.

Add a fruit cup and a cup for water.
