Does anyone know how long it takes for black hair dye to totally wash out of your hair? I haven't colored in probably 2 months, and I want to let it grow out so I can do a brown with blonde highlights, like I had before, but I need this black to come out. It already is growing out a bit, My real color is close to black though so you can't tell

My hair color is close to black too, so I use "brown/black" haircolor sometimes (the John Frieda colour foam kind).
Depends on the type of dye you used. Was it "permanent"?
Probably it will have to fade, and the roots will have to grow out the full length of your hair before you will have your totally natural color back.
Best thing to do, imo, is to dye it a closer color to your natural hair, or get your colorist to do it if your roots are visible, and then do highlights on top of that. If you do partial highlights I think the roots will be least visible as they grow out, and you can get either a root treatment or just update your highlights from there.
Hope this helps; I'm speaking as a similar color girl who's tried the same things :)
I had black hair for years. I loved it. My hair is very dark brown. I could not get it to grow out properly so I had the color stripped from my hair and my hair colored closer to my natural color. Bad idea. My hair was so fried it took forever to get it my hair healthy again. I hope you get some good advice here. Do not do what I did!!
Nope. Black has to grow out or be cut off. The only other thing would be to bleach it out and then color over that with the brown. It is a big job. I always discourage anyone from using black as it is so hard to get rid of. My best advise would be to see a professional if you don't want to wait it out. Hair grows on average a 1/2 an inch per month.
Your only option, if you want to be ride of it, is to bleach your hair, at which point it will probably turn a funny color. You can fix that color by dying it red (it will then be orange, most likely) and then putting your desired color over that. If you just out your desired color over the bleached hair, it will not have the right tone and will always look brassy.
I did that once before and I had the same problem. Then after that it still had an orange red tint to it so I colored over it dark again. Been doing that for over a year now. My hair feels thinner :( I normally have crazy thick hair it scares me. Thats why I don't want to do anything crazy, I was just hoping for it to grow out.

Yeah, mine turned orange red too! I do miss the black hair often though. At this point it is dark brown and I can live with that. Good luck to you.

All I know is that my hair is really, really, really dark brown...almost black originally. I've been coloring my hair for 19 years *my mom first had my hair dyed when I was 14, I turn 33 next week*, and I will never bleach my hair again. It fried. I have my hair red now, but I am thinking of just growing it out and leaving it my original color.
And yes thats permanent hair coloring.
My hair just doesnt like hair dye.
