Drug tests for welfare. My state's doing it.

HB0082 requires welfare applicants to take and pay for a drug test before being granted benefits. If you fail you are disqualified for 1 year. If you take a substance abuse treatment class you will only be disqualified for 6 months.

I believe they are doing this here because we are the #1 meth state. We have so much meth here we can practically bathe in it.

The one thing I'm not so sure about is making them pay for it. People who truly need state aid aren't going to be able to afford the drug test. They should reimburse them if they pass imo. Something like that.

EDIT

I live in Wyoming actually. Looks like I should have updated my research. I wrote a paper on it a couple years ago and we were top so I didn't look again. As of now this is the top 9:

  1. Hawaii – 410% higher than national average
  2. Arkansas – 280%
  3. Oklahoma – 240%
  4. Nevada – 180%
  5. California – 140%
  6. Wyoming – 130%
  7. Utah – 120%
  8. Arizona – 100%, and
  9. Kansas – 80%.

I agree with the idea...but i also think that if the state wants it, they should pay for it. if you can't afford food for yourself, how are you supposed to afford a drug test?

What state are you in? I know PA is/was considering it, I'm not sure what came of it though, or if any decision was made yet. And I agree, if they pass, they should be reimbursed.

Eh... they tried this in florida.
Failed horribly.
I'm not sure if they even still require the test.

Some low income housing does drug tests , when you move in and random I think it's a good idea

You still should have SOME money. And if the applicant has to pay for it they may be more likely to not even bother because they know they won't pass. If the state was paying they may just try anyways. And it would cost the state a ton of money. I'm sure it's not that expensive too.

Wyoming is a hard core red state. I believe it will pass. Just the initial vote was 47-13 in favor of.
