electric smokers?

Ok....so we are going to try smoking meats. I've never done it before. We are not wanting to spend $400 on our first one....I mean what if we never use it or I'm terrible at it lol. Plus its complicated enough as it is, and we figure if we can focus on and get good with the meat first, instead of trying to manage the meat and the fire ...that might go better.
So we were considering an electric one. They are underthe $100. It uses wood chips. Has anyone used these or have an opinion based on experience. I know it flies in the face of the purists...but we need to get our feet wet. We don't want to do charcoal.
What you say?

oooooooooooooooooooooooooooh electric smokers!!!!! DH has one-he got it cheap at Walmart-GREATEST THING EVER!!! I've yet to buy a meat he can't smoke!!

Every weekend in the summer we've got family coming over to smoke meats and bbq-it's so easy to do-the meats come out so juicy and tender and delicious!!!

You would not be disappointed if you got an electric smoker

Sears does a friends and family day once a month or every two months I forget. But I know our local sears has a friends and family day the 18th this month and that's when you get an extra discount and when we are going to buy some of our big ticket items. Check into it.

You do use the wood chips on the electric one.

It's a matter of taste and preference really. Dh said it all depends on what kind of meat you're smoking and what you like. My suggestion is to try different types of wood chips. We genereally use maple and hickory. Sometimes we use applewood for porks.

Don't forget to soak the chips about 30-45min PRIOR to using them!
