Should it be lowered or raised? Or do you feel it's fine since only losers make min wage? (heard this one on here before).

Where I live min wage is $8/hr. Rent for a one bedroom in a shady area of town is $900 a month. Soo after taxes a single person would be able to pay rent but that is all. Heaven forbid if that person is a single mom (which was not her fault as in husband died, all of a sudden left, etc). I feel min wage is fine... BUT rent prices are ridiculous. I feel rent prices should be More realistic. A single person should be able to afford a one bedroom apartment.

What do you think?

I don't think that minimum wage is meant to support of family.

Holy smokes! I'm kinda shocked to hear min wage is so much money in other places!

Quoting cLanief:

Imo min wage should be based off the cost of living.

In wa it goes up every year.... Didn't realize it was 9.04 now till seeing one of the replies.

Here a 3 bedroom is around a thousand a month.

That means if youre single, make 9/hr for 40 hrs a week... 160 hours a month that's 1440/mo... You make just enough to pay rent and basic bills and if you have 2 kids... Eligible for state benefits. and have to pay daycare too. :-)

Who said they want a less paying job to pay the same as a better one? Raising minimum wage isn't about people working basic jobs making the same as someone who works a more difficult position.

And how is this socialist?

Quoting StoneColdKiller:

I didn't say they don't want better jobs, but that they want a less paying job to pay the same as better one, mini wage isn't ment to support a family like many other here have state it's a stepping stone

Quoting miss_lisa:

I am socialist, but nothing about this conversation is socialist.

And it's a bit presumptuous to assume people don't want better jobs. There are still a lot of areas in the country where finding a minimum wage job is hard to do.

Quoting StoneColdKiller:

It's odd I notice a lot of you guys want it to be more socialist then, doesn't matter the job you think everyone should be paid enough to pay rent, food, gas, and bills which sorry why should you make 30k a year working 30-40 hours a week at like a dollar tree?

Last I checked if you are able to state help they pay a large portion of your dayca bills, I know a few single moms that do this and yes they work, get food stamped usually no cash help but they do get daycare cost help

Because shit happens.

For fucks sake get over it. Not everyone makes perfect, responsible decisions every single step of the way. In fact, NO ONE makes perfect, responsible decisions in every single situation.

Some peoples circumstances are beyond their control. It's easy to say "better yourself, get a better than min. wage job and you won't have to worry about it". Well, I hate to tell you, cost of furthering one's education is expensive. Some families just can't afford that. Yes, I believe a family working minimum wage jobs, but working their butts off to make ends meet should be able to afford the basic minimums--rent, gas, electric, food. In an area where rent is $900/month for a one bedroom in a shady neighborhood, minimum wage should be a little higher.

And, I could be wrong because I'm not big into economy, never was...but, if minimum wage is higher doesn't that make pay for more advanced jobs higher as well? So, someone at Dollar Tree might make $10/hour (20,800 gross/year), but then an RN would make, say $30/hour (62,400 gross/year) as opposed to  $22/hour (45,760 gross/year) in an area where min. wage is $7.25/hour (15,080 gross/year).

Okay.

So then you accept that YOU fucked up and didn't make good decisions and YOU find a way to fix it....instead of blaming your problems on minimum wage being too low.

You know...personal responsibility and all that garbage.
