A post to this group about the skyrocketing prices of groceries got me thinking about a show I watched a few yrs ago, and I am SO TEMPTED to do it.  Basically, these people (Freegans) choose to dumpster dive outside of grocery stores at night.  At first I was grossed out, but the follwing are a few examples of things these people were getting

Non perishible cans of food that had some dents in it

Same as above, but the lable was missing

Lotion, shampoo, conditioner (Never opened)

Make up (never opened)

Bread (not opened)

Sodas ( not opened)

BEER AND WINE (no joke)

plastic ware

paper products (TP and paper towles)

Cleaning products

Detergent

Bagels still in the bag (from bakery)

Some bagged fruit that was mostly good (ornages, apples)

Bagged veggies (carrots, potatoes)

These things are typically thrown out of the store if they can't move it from their shelves.  It makes me want to dumpster dive.

What do y'all think about this?

And no i would never get milk or some perishable item from the dumpster, or cheese, etc

Free is great but I'm not sure I could bring myself to do this...

Free is awesome but I don't think I would resort to dumpter diving.

I guess hypothetically I could understand getting some things that way - canned goods and packaged/sealed makeup, for example. It would be obvious if they had been tampered with in any way.  But fruits and breads... that I don't understand. It would be so easy to tamper with those things, and generally you don't cook them before eating them so I would think they could make you very sick.

I went dumpster diving in college once. It's technically illegal which would make me hesitant to do it now but I can see the appeal and if I was desperate I would.

Yeah, I would probably stick to sealed canned stuff myself.  And like someone else said, I don't know if I could bring myself to jump into a dumpster and rummage around in it........

I grew up in a college town and we went dumpster diving after one of the semesters let out.  Found a HUGE jar of change and it ended up being about 150 bucks.  So worth it!
