Too harsh?

So my 6 year old son got caught stealing twice today. It was only candy from home this time, but I know he needs to learn his lesson for it before it becomes worse so I made him write "I will not steal." 30 times tonight. About halfway through it he began complaining that his hand hurt and it was too hard to write because of the pain. He did finish it but does 30 times sound reasonable to you for a 6 year old?

I remember doing it when I was little but couldn't remember how many at what age. I do remember when i was in like fourth grade I had to do 500 lines (so did 3 of my 5 siblings) because we started a fire in the grass at our apartment complex :)

Yeah this is his first time doing it and he is only in kindergarten but i told him next time he gets caught stealing he will be writing it 100 times. Thinking I need to make him write lines for running in the house too... a few minutes ago he ran my 2 year old into the wall!
