I am re-reading "The Purity Myth" by Jessica Valenti (I recommend this book to everyone, and their mothers and daughters!)
I came across this:
"How different is deliberately turning young girls into sex objects by having them pose in underwear from getting dolled up for a beauty pageant or a "date with daddy"? Yes, the former is ment to elicit sexual arousal, but just because the latter is couched in the language of pirity doesn't make it any less sexual. Either way, the focus is still on girls sexuality, and it"s still making them "women" before their time.
What do you think? Do you think there is a difference between your DD dressing up for a special night, a dance recital or a pageant and her posing in panties for some pedo website? I always thought there was a difference, the intentions of course are different. However, I am beginning to see, the intent doesn't matter so much in the big picture. We all complain about kids (particularly girls) growing up to fast, yet we are partly to blame for it.
What are your thoughts?

I have read the book , yes girls are sexualized in all sorts of ways . there are the obvious and there are the not so obvious.
I think only a pervert would think "a date with daddy" is sexual.
I agree to a point. I think the glitz pageants are horrible and maybe my idea of them are skewed because all I know about them is what I've seen on Toddlers and Tiaras.
The makeup, the fake hair, the tans, and some of the outfits are downright shameful. I mean one mother had her DD dress up as Julia Roberts character from Pretty Woman, A HOOKER!
But a pedophile doesn't care what a child has on. Unfortunately, I think they prey on the innocence of the child so they probably wouldn't look twice at the more dolled up girls.
The point isn't to try nd not make them targets of pedo's.
I (and the book) is just trying to point out that often we play a part in the sexualiztion of our young daughters without intending to.

I really don't understand how anyone thinks daddy having a "date" night with his daughter isn't a bit creepy.

I agree.
it is not the date itself but whom the date is with. I like going on Dates with my sons, It teaches them how to treat a lady.
