I would say the person stating it has either never been married or has never been in a good marriage. Marriage is so much more.

To me, marriage is a more permanant comittment to someone than just being there. I realize that not all marriages last, and some are not "good." And that other couples that are not married can have a better relationship than those that are.
But, I feel that when a person is comitted enough to marry someone, and really mean it, it is so much more than "a piece of paper" as some call it.

I'd say they're single or their SO is using them for a booty call

If marriage is just a status, then changing it would be a lot easier than going through a divorce.

I agree. Isn't that how they word it on every application when asking? Marital Status. The relationship of the marriage is what we most care about.
