Should we pay for their wedding cake? UPDATE

SOs cousin was getting married in Oct. she asked if we can help with the cake. We said yes we have time to save money and pay it. She was having a semi big wedding and cake was coming out to a little over $400.

Now she decides she wants a small wedding and the new date is June 1st. She text me earlier to let me know. Since this will be a bit small now her cake will be $250 but the thing is SO hasn't been working for 3 weeks already. Right now we can't spend those $250 because i feel it needs to go to other things. We had over 3 months to save money and we were fine but now not so much.

Thing is SO says we should still pay for it that we will be fine. We might be I guess but I feel we shouldn't waste that money because it can go toward something else. We don't know when he will go back to work. I would really love to help them with their wedding they have helped us out in the past. I just don't feel now is the time to spend that much. What would you do?

Update: I just wanted to thank you guys for your answers. It was hard to make a decision because they have helped us in the past. We decided at first to only help them with half. Luckily SO started working again yesterday so we will be Able to help them with the whole cost. She chose a new cake that will cost $200. I'm very happy things worked out. They will have a cute wedding.

Explain to her the situation.
If you can't afford it then you can't.

Ok. But things happen. What if they need that $250 to guarantee their family has food?

That's what SO said but that's when she told us wedding is in oct. now today she says it's June 1st. We would have to pay it in 2 weeks. We did not expect that.

I know and I feel bad. I just really didn't expect to pay for that in 2 weeks. We had over 3 months for it. Out of no where she changed the date.

I wouldnt. You said you'd help, not pay for the whole cake. She shouldn't have been having a big wedding in the first place if she couldnt afford it.

That is not enough time for you; what your immediate family needs is most important.

If you can't,  you can't.  Explain the situation to her and maybe you can still offer some of the money down but not the whole amount.  Promise to make it up to her.
