"Short cake" is a type of sweet biscuit. A specific type. If you've had sponge cake with berries, that's not "shortcake." :)

We do cool whip. I don't like it so I use choc syrup instead

 I don't ice it. Usually, it's angel food cake, or pound cake with strawberries and either ice cream, whipped cream or both. I've never heard of putting icing on it.

I have never heard of any icing a strawberry shortcake.

What I call strawberry shortcake it angel food cake with whipped cream and fresh strawberries on top or beside it.
