How on earth do you pack light for a trip?

We are going to see my mom for 4 days, 3 nights. The train ride each way is 12 hours so we have to bring a bag of just toys and snacks. Just the girls and I are going, so diapers, wipes, pjs for 3, swimsuits for 3, toiletries for 3, 3 outfits for 3, and sandals for 3 since you have to wear closed toe shoes on the train. The trains are known for being either ungodly hot or freezing, so I packed hoodies for the girls and a receiving blanket for my baby.

Somehow this adds up to a backpack and 2 crammed duffle bags. Plus I am bringing the stroller so its slightly easier to get around the train stations.

How could I cut down on "stuff" and make this manageable? Its ridiculous!

I forget half of what I need, but we always have plenty of room in the car. You'd think i would make a list!

Pack trial size items-toothpaste, hairspray, ect. Also, how you layer when you pack makes a difference! Don't make stacks, make even layers for instance a pair of shorts then the next pair flip upside down and pack on top. It sort of flattens everything and and makes it more compact. I travel with my family, so I have it pretty much worked out. And put shoes/sandals in a grocery bag (so it won't dirty clothes and pack along the sides of clothes that way they don't stick out on the sides. Gl, I hope you have a great trip!

For 3 nights you can take travel-sized toiletries.

You can buy diapers there (except for what you will need ON the train.

Get a rolling back[ack for the toys and have your older daughter pull it.

Ship your stuff that isn't necessary in the train Ride.

I would only bring 1 toy each kid but other than that I'm not so sure how else to downsize that

Two toys total for 24+ total hours on a train? You are a brave woman. My children would destroy the train with nothing to do.
