2 moms liked this

my daughter who is 14 came home from school yesterday and told me she had to fill out a police report. She said that a boy in her class punched a girl in her face and because my daugher and 3 other students were witnesses, they had to file a police report. my daughter had to swear to tell the truth, she said that the cop was trying to put words in her mouth and she felt very uncomfortable. she is worried about having to go to court. I am upset that I wasnt notified. I, as the parent should have been there with my daughter or at least called to told my daughter was being questioned by the police. my daughter said that none of the parents were notified, not even the parents of the 2 kids involved. 1 of which was arrested. so do think that we should have been contacted?

Yes, I am not sure but I thought anytime a minor is question there needs to be a parent or someone there whose intent is to protect the child

I'd call and complain, especially if they made her feel uncomfortable

Nope happened to my brother around the same age. Except my brother witnessed something (I'm not sure of the whole story) and the cops came to his middle school, pulled him out of class, and into another room, and literally interrogated him. In his face and everything. Never once did my mom get notified.

Not as a witness.

I doubt that was legal. Ask an attorney. That's what I would do.

And if there is an altercation in my daughter's school, the students are never told whose parents are called.  If you are called because your child was involved, they do not even tell the parents the names of the other students involved.  Your child can tell you, but the school will not confirm any names or info relating to any child but your own.

Legally, they were required to have you present.

I don't know where you live but if you're in CA, police are not required to have parents present or to notify them when dealing with their children.

I had something similar happen to me and my 17 yr old. A cop called my son in his cell at 1130 at night to ask questions about prank calls being made. Yes, my son made one of them and he admitted it to the guy, but I am pissed that this cop called my son that late at night to question him. Obviously they knew of his involvment to justify calling him and I really feel they should have came to our home, at a decent hour to question him. And yes, I will be bringing this up at my son's court hearing friday!
