So I found out Indians get FREE insurance
Guess what I am? I am native american. In a few months I will have FREE insurance for the rest of my life. If you have 1 drop of native american blood you can get free benefits. I am so friggen excited. There are other perks but I just want the insurance. My husband's job doesnt give insurance often.
Quoting RedRozeMom:
IHS here require tribal membership and those requirements vary from tribe to tribe. If you have a CIB, then you can get the so called free care, but then you have to be near a clinic that will see you. Like other agencies in this country, they run on a budget. The IHS my hubbie goes to has turned away people from the navajo nation if their issue isn't urgent, as they have their own services in Gallup and Window Rock.
Now let me tell you my experience with IHS....
Hubbie's mom was misdiagnosed by IHS and died because of it. His family sued and received a settlement.
His father was diagnosed with having a heart attack and was sent to the Heart Hospital in Alq. They found nothing wrong with his heart.
My hubbise has had several teeth pulled because the dentist fucked up fillings.
Hubbie gets a different primary care physician every two years. He is diabetic and with every new doc, they want to change his meds and such and he has to fight with each to keep what is working the same.
It takes three months to get an appt for a simple physical. Then when you go to the appt, you sit three hours past the time you were supposed to be seen before you get in.
My daughter was on a three year waiting list for braces.
Do I like the care? No...but am I thankful my family has care as I wouldn't be able to pay for his care or my child's braces on my own.. I say a prayer every time one of the IHS docs touch a family member because they scare the crap out of me.
So...while you view it as free care, don't be so happy. I live on the rez and have heard similiar stories from others.
I love how everyone claims to be Cherokee, or related to a famous chief.
My dh and my dd both are covered by indian clinics =) Not me though unfortunately.. I know that i have indian blood... how do you go about findout out how much and which one is domonant and then getting the benifits?
Hubbys great grandfather was a chief of the Ceneca-Keyuga tribe out of Oklahoma... i dont think that he was famous though =P His grandma is half blood, and he is like...... a lot less than that haha. He has the height and build of that side of the family, but the coloring of a white dood lol
