Me and my DD went to my aunt's place for a celebration for Queen Victoria weekend, my uncle had his DJ'ing equipment out in the lawn..and we were all having a blast.

And all of a sudden , i hear a song BLARING ..about smoking marijuana...taking the tweezers to smoke it ..smoking it with a bong...

My aunt and uncle do NOT smoke pot, so i found it kind of weird that they even had the song to begin with (but..he is a DJ part time..so..)

We had my DD ( 10) , my cousin ( 9 ) and another non family member child (7)..there.

So i asked my uncle if he could please change the song. And omg i got so much grieve from everyone!! " It's just a song ....she doesn't know what it means.."

uhm..yes she is 10..she does go to school..she isn't oblivious to it!

Now i will say that my ex SO of 8 yrs , smokes pot..and i don't care about it , however he has never talked about it /prepped it or smoked it around our DD.

We both very much believe that children really shouldn't be around that stuff when they are with family ..we are supposed to be their role models after all.

Let me just add though..whenever DD has questions about drugs , we absolutely answer her questions..

My vent is that , they are FAMILY members .. i may be a stuck up snob here but it took me a good 10 minute's to calm myself down ..because i was not impressed that the ONE thing that i asked of them , concerning my parenting..got disrespected.

Whether it is a song or not ..IMO MY child does not need to hear that crap..especially at a family function.

(and yes ..the kid's had been dancing around to the music..so she WAS listening to the song )

Vent over

While it would have been nice for them to change the song, you can't change other people. You can only change your reaction to them.

10 year olds do see and hear much more than people give them credit for, especially people who have never had a 10 year old. I understand why you wanted the song changed.

yea,  i just went into the living room..and sat there. I didn't make a big deal out of it , but i was fuming.

they have two 19 yr old's in the house as well as a 13 yr old.

i just put myself in a different area than everyone else until i calmed myself down.

Sounds like a good time to just talk to her about drugs, and that sometimes there are songs about it but that doesn't make it right.

Im sure at least one OP will say their house their rules.

However Im with you. With all the fun songs available is it really asking that much to take in consideration their audience?

BTW I disagree with his reply. Kids hear lyrics like no other!  If they memorized their school work like they do lyrics we'd have a generation of kids with very good grades.

I probably would have asked for the song to be changed too.

IMO -keep the music/conversation/activities family friendly during the early part of the day, And a little later in the day say after 5-pm you can kick it up a notch or 2 or 3.  Really that is just being a good host or hostes if you are inviting people with kids under the age of 13.

Sounds like you handled it appropriately though so good for you! :)

I don't really see the big deal.  It's just a song.  If she had questions about it, I'd answer them.  Otherwise, no harm done.
