This Boy Would Have Lived If His Mom Had Used The Right Carseat

The article says the boy was 3 years old and in a booster seat. It says he undid the seatbelt so he was either in a backless booster or a high back booster.

He died as a result of this mom's ignorance. My son is 3 and still in a harness. He will be able to be harnessed at least for another year or more.

3-year-old Ohio boy dies after falling from car

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Authorities say a 3-year-old boy died when he pushed a handle and tumbled out the back door of a car and then fell under its back wheels while his mother was driving.

Deputy Steve Fickenworth of the Franklin County Sheriff's Office says the 23-year-old Columbus woman was turning at an intersection when the accident occurred in Hamilton Township on Monday evening. Fickenworth says 3-year-old Logan McClaskey died at the scene.

The deputy says the child had been buckled into a booster seat behind the driver's seat. He said the boy unbuckled the seat belt and pushed the door handle, and the door opened as the car made a right turn.

Fickenworth said the four-door sedan had child locks that weren't being used at the time.

There are plenty of car seats that harness longer. Like 65lbs or something. I do not have a lot of money so I put m kids in the best seats I can afford. My daughter is in my ride 65 and my son in an evenflo that turns into a hbb but harnesses to 50lbs. If I can afford another seat between now and when my 3yo 34lbs son reaches 50lbs I might buy one. I know at only 30lbs he could still be rf. My daughter is still rf at almost 2 and 20lbs. My son rear faced in his old evenflo until 32lbs, when he was 2years 8months. So I know that sometimes you can't afford super seats but a harness is better then no harness.

She should have him in a frontier it harnesses up to 85lbs

So sad. A girl I go to school with has he 2.5 year old in a hbb because he weighs over 30lbs. Makes me sick!

Well it's definitely not in mine and I KNOW police have much bigger things to worry about then to stop cars and ask for birth certificates for all of the occupants.  Most of the harnass and booster "laws" many of you quote on here are actually just recommendations.

Quoting AFWifeNMom:

It is against the law in my state for any child under age 4 to not be harnessed!

Quoting mjande4:

It's a tragedy, but she wasn't breaking ANY laws and frankly the child locks would be the key in this situation.

Quoting EsmeVincent:

My 4yr old is still in a 5pt harness and will stay in it until he grows out of the limits and into the booster limits. And ds is a big boy, he's 50lbs and 44in. Some people are too quick in trying to make their kids grow up. She was breaking the law by putting a 3yr old in a booster...that poor boy died because of her stupidity

SMH at people saying child safety locks are more to blame.

They would not have been needed if she would have had him in a harness. They are still good to have regardless, but if he was properly buckled he would have had a harder time getting out.

I just bought my DS a new carseat in March and the button is even hard for me to push, no way can he undo it. Most (not all) 3 year olds couldn't.

Yeah. Very irresponsible. People just think their kid wouldn't do that or nothing bad will happen.

at the end of the day, it is the parent's responsibility to properly care for their child.  and as another poster said, if the child lock on the door was on, this child would still be alive.

It was pure ignorance which resulted in that poor little boy's death. Tragic. However, I feel for the mother. Could you imagine the GUILT?!
