So, I made a post a few months ago asking for food ideas that went with our outdoor/camping themed birthday party and was told it was trashy that I wasn't serving a meal..just to explain my title. lol  Everyone thought it was awesome!  I had way too much food, in spite of me being so horrible and not serving a meal, and I got a lot of compliments on the decorations and the cake. :)

You can see the favors in the peat planter things and kind of see the bugs I made out of easter eggs and pipe cleaners.

Cake everyone said was super yummy.

I thought I got a pic of the whole spread but I didn't. :(  You can kind of see the trail mix bar (sticks, rocks, bugs, mud, etc.)

Ds had a blast, his friends had a blast and the adults all said it was really cute. ;)

Cake recipe, since a few people have asked:

I bought a cake mix. Imo, the taste of homemade isn't that much different than a box when it comes to cake so I saved myself some time, trouble and money and bought a milk chocolate cake mix. I made homemade frosting though using this as my base:
http://allrecipes.com/recipe/creamy-chocolate-frosting/detail.aspx?event8=1&prop24=SR_Title&e11=chocolate%20frosting&e8=Quick%20Search&event10=1&e7=Home%20Page

But, I wanted a more chocolatey frosting than that so I added about 1/8 cup more cocoa powder and backed off the powdered sugar (probably about a cup less). I would just slowly mix in until you have the flavor you want. :)

VERY IMPORTANT: You HAVE to put the oreo crumbles on before the frosting sets and gets that thin little ''crust'' on it!!!
I scraped off the middles of oreos, crushed them and pressed them into the top and sides of the cake then added Willy Wonka bugs to it.

That's stupid, kids don't eat a meal at a bday party, if u make them a plate of food, they pick at it, and leave the food to go play

Quoting LucyMom08:

Really? I've never served a meal, haha...

And his party looks like it was awesome!

Thanks!  I don't think so either but I got quite a bit of flak for not serving a meal. lol

I was going to make cupcakes too but it was too much work. lol  I'd never made or had a dirk cake before, just the dirt and worms dessert.  The cake was so much better, imo.

My SIL had a construction theme for her son's party last year, and she served a mud cake in the bed of a toy dump truck. It was soooo cute!

I don't think I've ever been to a birthday party where they served a meal.
