Schools in 49 states have banned sunscreen! Oh, mommies, WE NEED TO FIX THIS!

Two elementary school girls in Tacoma, Washington have reportedly suffered severe sunburns after their school banned sunscreen, MSNBC.com is reporting. The girls are sisters, and one of them has a skin condition that makes her especially sensitive to the sun. According to MSNBC, the girls’ mother is challenging the ban:

Their mother said seeing her girls walk through the door was a moment she’ll never forget. “It was horrifying to see (Violet’s) bright red face. There were welts, she was swollen and then I saw Zoe’s shoulders. It was absolutely painful and gut-wrenching to look at. I was horrified.” The burns were so severe, [Jesse] Michener whisked her daughters to the local hospital for examinations.

When Michener pressed school officials on the ban, they told her that there is a state-wide policy that does not allow staff to apply sunscreen to students, and students can only apply it themselves if they have a doctor’s note. The law exists because the additives in lotions and sunscreens can cause an allergic reaction in children, and sunscreens are regulated by the FDA as an over-the-counter drug. Michener discovered that the policy exists in 49 states nationwide; California is the only state to allow sunscreen in school without a doctor’s note.

“I did share with the principal that any policy that didn’t allow her to use common sense was something that I had to do something about,” Michener said. “She nodded and shook her head.”

oh and thinking she should have applied it before her daughters left, for a maximum of two hours coverage is going to be helpful how???

let's see.. most bussed kids. take an hour alone to get to school, then homeroom starts long before they'll release you to activities.. by the time you actually get to the field day.. sunscreen is no longer going to be effective..

soo..... had she been such a "genius" *sarcasm* like yourself *sarcasm*.. she's still have two lobster girls!

Yes, of course, she's smarter. (insert sarcasm font) She sent her preteen, fair-skinned, daughters to field day with NO sunscreen and in tank tops. She's an IDIOT plain and simple!

"The morning had been a rainy one but by noon the rain gave way to sun, and the girls began to burn. Violet and Zoe were not allowed to apply sunscreen due to a school policy against it, even though Zoe suffers from a form of albinism, a genetic condition that makes her particularly sun-sensitive."

Underline one from article.. again sunscreen before school would have been pointless.. it was well passed the two hours that sunscreen is effective for...

Underline two from article:....clearly the children had some but due to a policy the mother was unaware of, they were not allowed to use it..

That doesn't make HER, the MOTHER stupid..

HOWEVER, to keep insisting that she's stupid... even though had it been your children and you were in her boat and you applied it before school, you would have been stupid enough to assume it would last all day, and would have lobster girls just as much as she did.

Stupid is as stupid does.

You really shouldn't call someone stupid, unless your point is more intelligent than theirs, and clearly yours is not.

I see nothing wrong with the policy...be a parent and put sunscreen on your kid before school and if they're old enough to apply it themselves, get a doctor's note so they can do so. End of story.

Wow! The mom's name is Jesse and she sent her 2 girls without coverage. Maybe you are defending the idiot, because based on your screen name, you ARE the moron!? No one with half a sense would try and defend NOT taking necessary precautions, UNLESS they were the mother.

They have not banned sunscreen, but thanks for the hysteria. They have banned freely putting sunscreen on children without a doctor's note.  I have a friend whose son's skin turns into blisters not half an hour after putting certain kinds of sunscreen on, because he is very allergic to the ingredients.  There is a DAMN good reason for not giving kids meds or chemicals without a doctor's note on file.

They have not banned sunscreen, they merely stated that the children are to apply it to themselves and that a doctors note is required.

I don't see the issue here.

By elementary school children should be taught how to apply sunscreen to themselves. Also, an investment in SPF clothing is beneficial to children with sensitive skin.

Sunscreen is the responsibility of the parent and student, not the school staff.

but you need a doctors note to put sunscreen on in school? that's seems ridiculous!

This is a parenting fail. I babysit two kids with red hair and very fair skin. Both always have hats and shirts with sleeves. Heck my kids went to camp this morning with hats on and they never burn.

So every two hours the mom should of left work to go reapply sunscreen?
Quoting mjande4:

This has NOTHING to do with a sunscreen ban and EVERYTHING to do with an incompetent mother!  Mom didn't bother putting sunscreen on her daughters when she KNEW that they would be outside for field day. The mother is an idiot!  End of story.
