Yesterday was our July 4th. Some of you know i live in Seoul,Korea.First i will say i LOVE this country and most the people in it. If it wasn't for my daughter wanting to go back to the states we would continue to extend until time for my husband to retire then retire here. And i don't blame the Koreans for the celebration at all. Some Koreans were allowed on post to watch, they had to go through some stuff a few weeks prior to get a ticket and be escorted in and of post. Now to the point. It started at 5 pm,we got there at 5:30.When we got there their were about 300 people and one of the American/Korean bands were on the stage.(By 8 pm their was close to 2000 people) They did a great job. (Their was one boy that danced with them the whole time and was even allowed on stage for a few songs. He was so cute, about 8 yrs old. I didn't think he would ever get tired.)Then they did the raffle for a few door prizes and 2 round trip tickets to the US. Then the 8th Army band came up. I can't say how disappointed i was in this band. Not that they didn't play/sing well but they sang a LOT of Korean songs, including one of their patriotic songs. Now don't get me wrong. The patriotic song was just fine and i have no issue with them singing it. But the others shouldn't have been included. Then right before the fireworks they sang This Land is My Land. Your probably thinking well they sang ONE American patriotic song. Well they sang it so fast we could only make out a few words. Then once the fireworks started, not that they were bad,we ALL realized they seated everyone so far away that we didn't get to see about half of them due to the huge line of trees right in front of us.(You would think they would realize they needed to shoot them higher in the sky due to all the trees.) Plus they started the fireworks 12 mins early. Some people were still driving to get there to see them.I can't tell you how many people ,even the Koreans, said it (the song selection of the 8th Army band) was disrespectful and they were upset because it was started so early. Some people only got to see 4 mins of the 14 minutes fireworks. On the way out i heard a lot of people saying,"I thought we were here to celebrate a American holiday, not a Korean holiday?!" Yes the post also celebrates the Korean holidays. This was the first 4th of July celebration I've been to here. The first year we didn't go because my husband had 24 hour duty and last year we didn't go because of my medical issue. So i was really looking forward to going. I'm not saying i didn't enjoy some of it. Just watching the kids dance was enough for me.They were SOOOOOOOOO cute. But IMO ,and many that were their, it was disrespectful what the 8th Army Band did. You would think they would have sang a lot more songs that represent the freedom of our country.Yes we're in another country but once you drive on to post you are considered to be on US soil and we should have celebrated that.In NO way do i believe the Koreans are at fault and i think it was cool that some got to attend.
