Minor head injury leads to lifesaving discovery

VIDEO LINK

A kickball injury to the head likely saved Jacob Holdaway's life.

The 9-year-old Fairland, Ind., boy was struck in the head on July 4 while playing the children's game.

When he began to vomit and have severe headaches days later, his parents took him to a hospital where doctors made an alarming discovery, reports WRTV-TV in Indianapolis.

While there was no trauma from being hit, tests revealed a golf ball-sized mass in Jacob's brain.

Doctors were able to remove most of the mass but a small piece remains, wrapped around a nerve, the television station reports.

"(I had surgery) in my brain, so I can be better," Jacob told the station.

Doctors suspect the mass is benign, but Jacob will likely undergo chemotherapy to prevent the remaining piece from causing problems.

"The doctors told us that this is something that he's probably had for a while. Had he not got hit with that kickball, who knows what would have happened," Andy Hamilton, Jacob's father, said.

No parent would want their son hit in the head, but thankful he was because in this case a more serious problem was brought to their attention sooner than it would normally have.

Would I want my child hurt, no.  But I completely agree with the parents here.

Actually, the vomiting and headaches were from the tumor, not the kickball. So unless his parents are saying that they would have ignored him but they panicked over a stupid kick ball hit, they would have gotten him help as soon as he showed symptoms anyway.
Glad the doctors found it, though, and I hope he makes a full recovery.

Yes, but if my child were nauseas and vomiting when they hadn't been hit in the head by a kickball, I wouldn't have taken them to the doctor. I would have thought it was the flu and stayed home.

Who is to say, the symptoms from the tumor may not have shown up until much later if not for the kick ball to the head.

About 9 years ago our dog jumped on DH's crotch.  He was swollen for a day or two.  One side got better in a day or two, but the other didn't so he went to the doctor.  He had testicular cancer.  All of the doctors he saw asked him why he came in because it was too early for any symptoms to normally start showing.  I now that that dog(he passed in March 2012-he was 13) for saving my DH's life and allowing our DD and DS to come into our lives a few year after this.

BTW he is fine now and has been for neerly 8 years.

If you read the article, you would understand.

"The doctors told us that this is something that he's probably had for a while. Had he not got hit with that kickball, who knows what would have happened," Andy Hamilton, Jacob's father, said.

It still doesn't make sense to say the parents wanted their hurt child playing. It isn't like parents have x-ray vision. My sister had leukemia and was still going to swim practice and tball practice until the signs and symptoms started. I read the article, and it says nothing about the parents making the kid play although they knew he had a brain tumor.

Like I said in my previous reply about my DH not having any symptoms of testicular caner until our dog hurt him, these parents may not have seen any syptoms in their son until much more had to be done.

mstricey --are you confused??? his parents were unaware of tumor prior to ct scan, he did NOT show any sypmtoms prior to getting hit.. Doctors said that this would have gone undiagnosed for a long time because he had not prior symptoms and also even if he did show symptoms, such as vomiting and headaches it would have been chalked up to stomach flu or migraines. doctors dont routinely do ct scans on children
