What's up with young children saying the same thing over and over again? I know it's not just mine, because my friends say their little ones do it too. My 3 yo, for example, will something like "I love my cowboy hat!". If someone doesn't immediately respond, he'll just keep saying it. Over and over and over. My 5 yo did the same thing when she was this age. Now, I never intentionally ignore the things they say. But sometimes I'm doing something and can't respond right away. I'm just wondering why they do this? And is there anything you can do to encourage them to stop? Or is this just a super annoying phase that I have to wait out? lol
Perhaps Dora has something to do with it? I mean how many flippin times does that goofy ole map say "I'm the map, I'm the map, I'm the map"? Great now I have that stuck in my head.
Quoting Smarty_Skirt:So he keeps repeating even after you've responded? That's a whole new level of annoying! lol
Quoting shadow_lark:
Idk, my four year old does the same thing. i respond the first time and ignore every repetition thereafter.
Quoting shadow_lark:
Yes. he will ask the same thing over and over, even after i have responded.

My older kids if I don't respond they just walk away. Lol

Try responding with a question, such as oh, yes you mentioned that you loved it, why do you love it so much?! theu respond and then you respond with something like, yes, I love my mixer, and let them ask you why. Its a childs built in deaire to learn conversation, ignoring will only make a child not wish to talk to you. ingage in a simple question and answer conversation and watch your childs intelligence soar beyond your imagination! Never ignore a child!

Exactly. Plus, not every mom has the time to sit and answer every random stream of questions their preschooler launches into. In the car, sure. At dinner, of course. During story time, yeah. But when I'm trying to balance the checkbook and write child support receipts before the pots boil over on the stove? Not so much. My kids know that if they need to talk to me or ask me something, they can always do that. I'm not talking about stiffling an inquisitive mind or cutting off open communication. I'm talking about "Mom, I have on slippers. Mom, look at my slippers. Mom...mom....mom...." when I JUST put the slippers on his feet and I'm now on the phone with the student loan people. See the difference? lol
Quoting shadow_lark:
I try that. when he asks me why over and over I'll ask him what he thinks the answer is. a lot of the time though, if i try to redirect the conversation he turns right back to what he already asked about. i understand that kids learn through conversation, but Im not answering the exact same question 15 times in a row.

Mine does that as well as "WHYYYYYY" over and over. And then if I am telling him something (I know he hears me, we have tubes and hearing test is now perfect) he says "what"' I repeated my self "what" and again and again.
