Why don't kids open presents at birthday parties anymore?

Seems like the last couple parties my child has gone to, their presents were never opened at the party, just taken home.

It used to be that the birthday kid opened the presents and everyone could see what they received and the birthday kid thanked the givers..

Is this just not "usual" anymore?

I think it's a time factor thing. Lots of parties are held at theme places where there is a time limit. I've seen where by time the good and cake are done, time has run out. The last party we were at was a pool party and they just couldn't get the kids out to do it!

We never do it. To me it's more of a pain. We open them at home and send out thank you notes.

I noticed the same thing...at first I thought it was rude but now I kind of think it's a good idea! There's so many kids fighting over trying to open my kids gifts for them lol and takes forever!

I agree thats its probably because of the limited amount of time. The last party we went to, the kid was tearing into the gifts at the end because they only had 10 minutes left!

In my experience it's because parents haven't taught their children to keep their hands off of others new gifts.

Presents at all are very unusual around here.      The past few years my kids were the only ones out of all the other parties we've been to where the child had any gifts, lol!

Contributing to a charity is usual.

I think its rude to NOT open them at a party. My DD loves to see her friend or who ever open the gift she picked out for them. Screw thank you notes, same generic response with a different name and a different item. We always make sure there is a time to open gifts, ooo and ahh and thank yous passed around.

I haven't been to one like that. We just had DD's birthday party on the 5th and she opened her presents in front of everyone!
