Does your child's elem school have an extended day program???

Does anyone here have any experience with a child in an extended day program at their elementary school where they stay on campus after hours?  The program here says they provide a snack and homework assistance and then play time for the kids until the parents pick them up.

I am going to register my daughter today since her daycare changed their hours to 6 and I wouldn't get there until 6:30.   But my mom says she doesnt think it would be as "secure" as a daycare, since daycares have locked doors and the school lets the kids play outside! I think if the school is secure enough for me to send her to during school hours they would maintain the safe environment after hours too......

any opinions??

THANKS!

What's odd? That they keep the front door unlocked? That's how the school was when I went and that's how my sons school is. Front door unlocked but office right there to check in.

I'm sure mine does, it's not something I use. But sure, it would be secure.

But why don't they hav elocked doors. I've never heard of an elementary school not locking the doors.

They keep the front door unlocked during school hours but the front desk is right there and visitors are required to check in.  my mom is just paranoid and crazy and i think watches to many crime shows.

I am blown away by that. I'm not sure that I would send my kids that school.

That is just odd.

Ive been a teacher for a long time and ive never heard of a school locking the front door.  The school I teach at (and my youngest attends) does not lock the front door.  You enter the school and can get into the gym, lunchroom/auditorium and into the offices easily.  To get down the halls where the classrooms are you need to be buzzed in, have a teachers ID that has the electronic key embedded or go through the office.

In theory if you came around noon you could get the kids at lunch, or the ones in PE, then again what is stopping someone from causing damage on the playground or on the soccer field.

I feel very safe in the school I teach at and anyone can enter the school or playground.

Every school in my state locks the front door and you ring a bell to be let in.

I think that's strange that you lock the classrooms, but ignore the rest of the school.

So I assume the kids never go out doors?  or are there solid walls surrounding the playground?  I find it strange to run a school like a prison.  There is no more or no less security/danger in my kids school than they get at home, sports, dance, church....

Trust me if a crazy wanted to knock off the kids in your childs school they could get to the kids, even if they waited till the kids were on the way to the bus.  NO reason to keep the kids walled up and treat them like prisoners.

Ive taught in 2 states, california and minnesota, neither locked up the offices.

Of course they do, in secure areas. You ahve locked doors as well...it's no more like a prison than yours, lol. What a ridiculous statement.

Of course there is less security...I highlighted where you said there was.

What state are you in?  Id be afraid of they psychological impact of housing kids as if they will be murdered during story time.  Yes we lock the wings of the school where classrooms are but during passing times, before and after school as well as lunch time the doors are wide open.

That's the same here, but I have used them when my kids were younger. I never had an issue, the kids liked the people who watched them and they had a few friends who were there with them. they did homework and played. Here you had to pick the kids up by 6.

The YMCA runs the before and after school program here. I don't use it, but I have heard good things about it.

MA. they aren't locked from the inside. It has no effect on the kids. Are you always this ridiculous when you try to have a conversation. What kind of teacher are you?

I would be concerned with sending my kids to a school that has no idea who is walking through the halls.

No recess once you reach 5th grade? What kind of prison are you sending your kids to?

so do the kids not have recess? or is there a locked gate around the entire school?

Of course they have recess and the only way to get to it is through the school. Some of our schools even do recess on the roof. But are the city schools, I don't live in the city.

But yeah of course they make sure no one is getting into the play areas. Why wouldn't they?

Once you get into 5th grade no more recess.

Our schools here lock the doors and you have to be buzzed in and there is a camera or they ask who you are through the intercom. The high school has a security guard at the front door if the doors are unlocked. The classrooms aren't locked and the office isn't either.
