Child Suppprt Payments are too High?

I'm probably going to get slammed for this but it seems that child support payments ordered by the courts is generally higher than what is really needed to take care of a child. I truly mean no disrespect to those receiving child support because I really believe that both parents should be financially responsible. But for instance my bio dad recently told me he pays $700 per month in child support to my half brothers mom. My husband and I have 3 sons together and we don't even spend that much per month on all 3 of them. Only time we would maybe use that much on all 3 is for Christmas and when we have all 3 of them in school and have to shop for school clothes. How are these child support payments figured? What's taken into account to come up with these numbers? Again, no disrespect intended to those receiving them. I'm just curious... Thanks!

See I just don't get how they figure it, in your situation I think you should get more. Is it based off of income made by the parent paying? Occasionally you'll hear of these child support cases for celebrities and they have to pay these crazy high amounts to the other parent. Based probably on the fact that they make so much?

You probably dont spend that much because you pinch and save it

But it comes down to a formula in certain states of what the person makes. They consider school, activities, food, clothing etc per month.
Unless you have a greedy ass spouse who will put the other spouse through the ringer, it should be a fair amount. Some people think they are entitled to almost a full check forgetting that the other will also have expenses after the divorce

It doesnt work like that in most states now. They are making the orher spouse find a job to help with the child support. Long ago men were in a hole while the ex wife was living the lap of lux. Not anymore. The sahm excuse is being thrown out the window lil by lil. Get a job and support your child too, is what is being said. You both decided to have the kids, you both are responsible for supporting them.

Yes, the bio mother and father. The percentage changes by state.

Both biological parents? I was confused for a moment because I thought you meant combined income, as in my income and my husbands, rather than my husband's income and his ex wife's. Sorry! lol

It's based on a percentage of your combined income.

We dont buy new shoes or clothes each month either. We buy as needed. We budget out of every check/week for them though. Then the money is put back when they need it. $700 isnt much at all. Not when you consider rent/mortgage (which shouldnt fall on one parent if the kids live in one home primarily), utilities, food, transportation, and hobbies. We pay $100 a month for 3 kids hobbies. $500 a month for groceries for 5 people. And my boys eat the bulk of it lol. If you half those there is $350, half the mortgage (and ours is cheap!) is $200 so we're up to $550. Just a portion of gas could easily run $50. $600 a month, my water bill is about $75. Gas is about that in the summer and my electric in the summer (when the a/c is on) is like $200. In the winter the electric is less but gas is more. Half of utilities could easily run $175 and our house isnt huge by anuy stretch. So that would be a total of $775 without factoring any vehicle cost or insurance, clothes or shoes, or hobbies.

We are frugal too and do not buy new shoes and clothes for our kids every month. They are almost 2, 4 and 7. I guess if you took into account all the utilities that would add up but how much of that should the other parent be responsible for considering the parent with custody receiving the child support is also the one living at the home and using the utilities.

Um, you dont spend $700 a month on food, shelter, utilities, toiletries, clothes, shoes, and hobbies?! Are you kids toddlers? We are very frugal, but my kids eat healthy. We live in a moderate home. Dont have tv/satalite/cable or video games and we EASILY spend that on our three oldest kids who are 9,8, and 5.

I live in Illinois and here, you pay 20% of your income for one kid, 25% for 2 kids, and 30% for three or more. If they're different mothers, the first gets 20%, the second gets 20% of what's left, and so on, as long as they only have one kid each.

Child support isn't based on how much it costs to raise a child. So you really think that Bill Gates should pay the same amount as a garbage man? A child is entitled to live in the lifestyle his parents can afford to provide.

This theory that people (mostly men) have that your kid can live as Paris Hilton until you dump the mom and then it's all thrift stores, is bs.  Child support should be a set percentage of income, because kids with richer parents always have more than kids with poorer parents, and some guys just can't afford to pay more, even if it is half of the cost of raising the kids.

Child support is usually figured on what the income of the entire family would be if it was still together.  They take mom's salary, dad's salary, that gives X amount.  Then they determine who would be contributing what, if Dad makes 3X more than mom, he would contribute more because percentage wise that is how it is calculated.  To make things easier, say mom has full custody of child/children. Dad makes 10K per month gross, and mom makes 3K.  I am not sure what the exact percentage they use, but let's say it is 30% of each parents income goes to the child.  That would be 3K from the dad, and $900 from the mom.  If there were no visitation or any other payements dad makes, he would owe mom $2100 per month because that is the difference of the two incomes.  Most of the time however, dad has a time percentage deducted from his CS, and any other payments such as childcare, insurance, other CS payments, etc.  If mom pays them however, they would be deducted from her amount, so Dad would have to pay more.

Child support payments goes towards actually raising up a child, food, shelter, heat, electric, gas and automobile to get kids places, clothing, extra activities, etc. not just groceries.  It adds up, and adds up quick.

Yup! And what I find interesting, and frankly very fair and I'm happy they do this, is that if one parent is unemployed, they do not base it off of $0 income, they base it off of potential income based on minimum wage, full time. It evens things out if one parent refuses to work.

It all depends on how much the person who is paying CS makes

I see numbers here and i get more for my kids, because he has a good paying job and made morr than me

If he makes good money, the child support is higher
In some cases the wife makes good money, so she ends up paying the CS

My ex makes quite a bit . When we divorced he was responsible for daycare and I think thats what kept the cost down but my kids do not attend daycare anymore. I think if I took him back to court I would get waaaaay more but he's a good dad and has them just as much as I do so I just let it go....
