We had our open house tonight and it was great to meet all the kids. I also had a chance to hear about a new program the school is offering. Ive never heard of anything like it and I wanted to share so you could pass the idea to your kids schools.
We now have a snack break cart. For $65 a year (scholarships available) you can buy a membership to the snack club. It works out to about 30 cents a day. Remember in harry potter how the lady came on the train with snacks from the trolley? Same thing. The lunch ladies go from room to room with a cart loaded with raw veggies, fresh fruit, pretzels, whole grain crackers and cheese, and many other healthy choices. Students may select a skim milk or bottle of water and one snack each day for their 30 cents.
They can and will remove the baskets containing products that students in a particular class have allergies to before the cart enters the room. Snacks from home are very limited (mainly any veggie or fruit).
I thought it was a great way to encourage healthy eating, portion control and allergy control.
