Do you have any type of craft store near you? They may have brown paper squares (you know how they have different shapes that are brown to paint etc...) or maybe milk cartons from a nearby grade school?

Use wire to construct wire box (cube) structures. Wrap with clear or whitish plastic. Kind of like light tarp.

Or

Cut up plastic bottles and construct cubes with that.

I'm thinking if you do it with the wire on the inside it would make it way easier to attach to whatever...

I'm thinking styrofoam chunks.  You could probably get some at the craft store or see if you can find old packing material (like if somebody has taken a TV/computer out of the box).  Cut it with an electric knife.

Wire shaped to form a square, and I'd say celophane, like the kind they use to wrap baskets? It's got a sheen to it..it'll look like the cubes are melting.

You could also take the same celophane crumple it up and put it in plastic baggies and make it like crushed ice.
