My 11 yr old's class is going on an AR field trip tommorow.Brian is not going....

For those of you that don't know AR is the Accelerated Reading that the schools are enforcing now. 1x every 3 weeks or so they are tested on the books they read.To be able to go on the field trip they need to have 85% of the testing right.

Brian did NOT want to read-I figured I'd let him see what the consequences were for not following the rules. ( I have talked to him until I was blue in the face;we've grounded him;took away his TV time;took away the Xbox...etc).

Anyhow, the field trip is tomorrow and Brian is the only one who didn't get his reading done. The teacher called to say that it wasn't necessary for Brian to be at school tomorrow.....I'm sending him anyway. While his classmates are watching "Hotel Transylvania" at the theater  Brian will be in school with a "sub" doing schoolwork.

I feel REALLY MEAN!! Is this too harsh or do you think he will actually learn more from this than anything else I could do?

I think it's a good punishment. He didn't do his share of reading.

I would not make him go to school since the teacher called and said his attendance was not necessary. I would talk with him about how much it sucks that he's missing out on the movie with his classmates.

I wouldn't necessarily "punish" but I wouldn't make it a fun day either. No TV or computer or anything until he finishes the reading that he didn't do.

Good on you for letting the kid face the natural consequences of his actions.

NO NO NO  dont let him stay home.  That would seem more like a reward.  I would send him to school to do the school work with sub.  That is a natural consequence of not wanting to complete school work whether it be in school or at home.

he should go to school. Maybe that will be a push for him.

As for reading does he get to pick the books or are they assigned. He might not want to read them because they don't interest him. I know if a book doesn't get me with in the 1st 10 mins I won't read it and I LOVE to read.
