Oriental or Asian?

I was in Walmart today looking for some wild rice for Thanksgiving, and the isle where things like soy sauce, rice, etc are found was labeled "Oriental."

I was always taught that "Oriental" is considered a racial slur and that "Asian" is more appropriate. Is using "Oriental" inappropriate & insulting to Asians?

Oreintal is not a racial slur. I'm part Asian. Trust me it's no racial slur ...at least not to me.

I was told that Oriental is the correct term for merchandise such as Oriental rugs etc... I believe when referring to the people that Asian is appropriate.

Its only racist when referring to Asians as "Oriental".

"Oriental" are Asian PRODUCTS, not people.

Oriental are objects from the Orient. Persons are not objects. :)

This.

That being said a lot of Asians won't mind if you call them Oriental. In fact some Asians will call themselves Oriental to distinguish themselves from Southeast and South Asians. Some of the more "westernized" Asian people might complain if you call them Oriental....but most wont. It's not insulting, just the wrong context.
