After this should I still let them operate on our baby?

Posted by   + Show Post

After what happened today I am not sure if I want the doctors to still operate on our baby. Would you if you were in our shoes?

Okay I will start at the beginning. On forth of July we noticed our baby was walking funny so we checked her foot and found what looked to be a thorn in it. So myself, dh and mil worked on her foot and we thought we got it out. But three days later when she still wouldnt walk on her foot I took her to the ER and they said she just had some splinters still in it and it would heal. So a month goes by and she still isnt better so I took her to her pedi and he said it was wart and froze it. Well three months later when I took her to the pedi for a ear infection I begged for him to look at it again because I knew it wasnt any better. And finally when the pedi looked at it he agreed with me and said he had no clue what it was either and sent us to a specialist a hour and a half drive away. Well we went to the specialist and even he said he didnt know what it was either but he said he knew it wasnt supposed to be there and said he would scedule a surgery to get it out. So he scheduled us a pre op appt because the surgeon said he would never operate on anyone without doing a pre op.

So pre op was scheduled for tomorrow morning first thing and they called us today to confirm the appt. So thirty minutes before they closed dh asked me to call then to see if they had a open friday appt so he could come with us since he didnt have work that day. So I did and they said that we didnt have a appt at all! WTF! They just called us to confirm our appt this morning now all of a sudden we dont have one! And that not all. Not only did we not have a appt they said it wasnt necessary for our dd to have a pre op since she was so young! So here I was I had to re schedule my pre natal appt that I had tomorrow to go to the pre op appt. Dh and I asked mil to watch our oldest dd so we could go to that pre ob appt. We gased up our car and packed everything to entertain and feed our 19 month old baby for the hour and a half one way car trip and it turns out that they totally and utterly messed up!!!!!! I talked to the nurse tonight and she said she would talk to everyone in the morning and figure out what is going on but she said not to worry that I might not have to have a pre op appt and that we just need to show up on the 30th for the surgery! Okay now this sound so outrageous that I feel like I am on a episode of house right now!

After everything that happened I am not sure I want them or trust them enough to operate on our 19 month old baby? Would you?

It sounds like an honest mistake and unfortunately scheduling mistakes happen often. Actually try to do a pre op and talk to the doctor, if you still feel uneasy... get a second opinion. I hope everything turns out ok.

I understand your hesitance. I would see what happens tomorrow before I made a decision.

Mix ups happen because of the clerical staff, not the doctor or the nurse. That being said, why haven't they x-rayed first.

Thats a good question. I dont know why they havent x rayed first. Out of everyone I have talked to x rays never came up.

Show up at the scheduled time Anyhow.... Its possible that you really have an appt and the person you talked to is just completely inept at their Job.

Well, I stand by the fact that a clerical error is not cause for stopping necessary surgery, but I'm not sure that they have cause for "necessary" surgery at this point. They don't know what it is, and they didn't x-ray to find out more? That's odd. There is absolutely no reason you should not get a pre-op. Insist upon it and ask the doctor why there's been no x-ray or further investigation before they put your child under anesthesia and knife; if they cannot give you an answer or even a pre-op appointment, do not do it and find another opinion if it's within your means. Remember, you are mom and you are the boss. You have the right to be overbearing and in-your-face when it comes to your kid and surgery!

When my DS ha to have surgery at 6 months old he had to have a pre-op. I would just call back and see what I going on. I would still let them do surgery though. Your child obviously needs it. Good luck.
