how do you start elf on the shelf?

 i have the little movie but i have not seen it yet.. ive read to have him appear at the house with a welcome letter but i cant seem to find a template for the letter? if anyone has an elf on the shelf how was he/ she introduced the first year?

We just started it this year but our elf was delivered from Santa as a birthday present. I couldn't think of any other way to start it.

Did you get the book with the elf? The elf can't fly back to the north pole until the kids name him/her.

I read the book, we named the elf and he was there the next day.

I just set him out one night with the book. I do have the letter. I can send you a link once my husband gets the wifi back on, he's setting up a new computer right now.

On thanksgiving we read the book, they named the Elf and Friday he magically appeared.  

each year following we will read the book on thanksgiving and on Friday he will appear again

Oh i should add, the night before Christmas Eve is the last night he is out. and then he gets put away for the year. and remember DONT let the children see you move him or put him away
