My morning at the fs office. *update*

***if you are going to offer me great spontaneous knowledge or bashing, go.right.ahead.***

So over the weekend my fs card was locked because dh said it wouldn't take the pin. He assumed that hed entered it wrong and locked it out. No biggie. Sunday though it hadn't unlocked and it was supposed to unlock at midnight. So this morning I went in to see someone about it. I've been to the fs office on Monday morning before...it's usually deserted at 9am. It.was.packed. Finally got to the window to check in and see what I needed to do and I was not the only person whose card was locked. She said sit and wait they were working something out. I say ok, no problem.

I have no problem waiting. It's PA. It's help. It's free. I'm not ungrateful. Without it we couldn't eat 2 weeks out of the month. I'd wait all day it it was what it took. This lady was so irate she had to be escorted out. Now I can't help but feel the folks that work in that office are supremely patient with all the crap they take. She was screaming at this woman at the window saying she stole food out of her kids mouths and ages going to hell, etc. And sorry, but she did not look like it was "for the kids". More for the corner store to buy from her to support her habit.

Anyway, I'm there for a few hours. I get called. My card "reported itself stolen"...wtf? No worries, a new one will be sent out to you; you'll see it in about a week, cheers. I ask her for a confirmation that it's been reissued (it seemed fishy since They can just reactivate the one I have and they can issue them just as easy in the office). She comes back with an email saying essentially 1,944 cards had been "erroneously cancelled" due to a system glitch over the weekend. They are working to fix it, please don't reissue cards. Ok fine.

So here I wait. I'll probably be back in tomorrow since they will have more information. It's only a fraction of the county effected so I'm hoping it doesn't take long.

I feel aweful for this one lady who said she went shopping Saturday night after it had been cancelled and had to walk away leaving a full cart of groceries.

It was craziness. But it's sad. Most people rely on fs to get them through the beginning of the month, myself included. It's only $160 but its what helps bridge the gap.

Ok story over. Let my CM tounge lashing begin lol.

**update: so I called the main line and they sent out new cards. But if I can't wait I can travel across the county to the one they are issuing cards at to get it reissued in person. It's a pain but I can't go a week plus at the beginning of the month w/o it so off I go.

No bashing from me. These issues happen and maybe in the future some people (like the lady who needed to be escorted out) will try to budget their stamps so there is a little leftover at the end of the month to cover an unexpected situation such as this.

I've had issues lately as well. I received a notice in the mail saying I had to complete a phone interview by Dec 1...only I received the notice on Dec 18! The lady at the office sounded like she didn't believe me and told me I had to reapply altogether. I did. Then I got a notice saying they'd call me at 1pm on dec 27 and if I didn't answer I'd be denied. Still no call at 1:10 so I called the office and left a message. At 1:30 my caseworker called and said I didn't have an interview scheduled. When I read off the paper she admitted she had forgotten. They lost my proof of income and kept mixing up my case with someone else. I still remained patient and cooperative.

Then a few days ago I received a letter in the mail saying they dropped my amount from $526 to $80 per month! I called back in tears asking why since nothing had changed. It turned out they "rounded out" my income to be $400 more than I get during a GOOD month. She fixed that and then said I'll be getting $160 - still much lower than before. When I asked why she tried accusing me of lying on my previous application. When I proved I didn't do that she said "well maybe your old caseworker didn't do her job but I pay attention to the information in front of me" -wtf?!?! I make $500 and receive child support, but even WITH child support I'm well below the maximum income for a family of three AND I have a special needs child which is supposed to allow me to have an even higher income and still receive benefits. Both my boys have special dietary needs and I spend an extra $300/month on food even after the $526...how am I supposed to get by on $160?!

That sucks. If that happened to my sister she would be screwed without help from family (which she would get easily). She depends on her food stamps and disability check.

That's crazy, I'm sorry. They've yo-yo'd our benefits over the last year between 120 and 460. Dh's income doesn't really fluctuate but everytime there's a new case worker it changes.

It depends on how many dependants, how much total income includ.childsupport, your rent or mortgage and utility bills.  2 things make a big difference. Rent and Income. The higher your rent the more foodstamps and the lower your income the more foodstamps. I'm guessing the new worker is right. I have 2 kids get child support and have never ever ever recieved $526 on foodstamps. I've been in all sorts of different financial situations. Living off childsupport working you name it.
