Does this question offend you: "Do you work?"

Does it bother you when someone says, "Do you work?" (especially if you are a stay-at-home mom)?

When I ask that question, I'm just trying to find out if someone has a job that earns a paycheck . . . is there a better way to ask?

Should I say, "Do you work outside the home?"

When I was a stay at home mom and asked, no, it didn't bother me. When people ask, they are trying to find out if you have a job and I didn't consider staying home with my kids and taking care of them a "job". I had nothing to prove, I was happy with my situation.

I tend to ask "where do you work?" if I am talking to someone.

No, it wouldn't offend me. I do work though. I think asking if they work outside the home is a good way to phrase it.

This too! When working with clients I usually say "what kind of work do you do?"

I am a SAHM, even if my son hasnt made his arrival yet. I babysit my nieces and nephew during the day, so in a way I do have a job, but nothing like DH's paycheck. I wont be offended, but at the same time, that is somewhat a personal question.

I was a FT SAHM for 8 years and it never offended me.  It's just small talk.

It doesn't offend me but I'm always hesitant to answer cause when I say I'm a stay home mom all I usually get is a disappointed look and "oh" with a scrunched up nose like I'd just cut one in public or something.

It wouldn't offend me personally.
