 Okay the words are:

ordeal                   garb                  abiding             pummeled           skivvy

umbrage            blithely               rancid           resonated         discerning

I thought some of them were a little much... but maybe that's me.

Many of you were right on the money with 3rd grade.  My ds is not having an issue with them (thank God he doesn't have to spell them) I just thought they would be a higher grade.  More like middle school.  But then again I went to school in the 80's.  The rigor was different, not nec. less but a diff focus.

My son had some of those in 1st grade, but he has an advanced list of spelling words.  So I would have guessed 2nd grade.

Very true.   The general rule for medical information (pamphlets, etc.) is and 8th grade level.

Quoting URHonor:

The NY Times is written on a 9th grade level. Most local papers are on a 6th.

Quoting MusherMaggie:

Part of the reason some people don't recognize them is that newspapers & magazines are so "dumbed down" in the vocabulary that is used. No one reads classic literature any more.

I don't think I've ever used umbrage or blithely in a sentence......

My kids school doesn't do spelling or vocab anymore. They say it is an unnecessary use of classroom time, especially with today's technology" = /

if they need to know what they mean and how to use them correctly in context...i'm going to say 2nd grade

spelling?  probably 3rd

if a kid reads consistently and widely you'd be surprised at the vocabulary they understand

remember, our receptive language is always ahead of our expressive language, that's from the get-go, kids know the meaning of words waaaaay before they can say them and use them correctly

I'm an English major and should totally agree with everything you said, LOL.

However, my huge classic literature fanatacism is an acquired taste.

I would venture to say that reading is most important, if it's literature, even better, but classic, that's just an added bonus.

Some of the classic lit I've was horrendous, some was awesome.
