What kind of bee is this? I thought it was a yellow jacket but when I compared the pictures, they look totally different. Can anyone help? They're building three hives outside my living room window right by my front door.

*EDIT* Just found two more starter hives outside the window of the girls' playroom. :/ The wasps were all huddled on them.

I'd say yellow jacket, since the wasps around here anyway are brown.

this from ehow.com

Yellow jackets are a type of wasp identified by their "yellow jackets" and thin waists. Most nests are built underground, but yellow jackets are known to build nests in walls, trees, attics and hollow logs. They travel across distances of up to 1,000 feet to feed on meats and sweet foods. Nests average 3 to 6 inches in diameter but can grow larger. The safest method to eradicate a nest is to have a professional pest-control technician remove it.

Anyway, I'd get hornet spray that shoots from 20 ft or more,  or wait until it is chilly out and they are inactive.

See, these have way more yellow than the one at my house. I'm terrified of these things now.

When there are nests around, just be vigilant and avoid making rapid moves when one is near. Also I wouldn't eat fruit outside, this draws them.
