It seems like it would be impossible!

It depends on where you live. Where we used to live you could get a house for $20,000. yes, a house, or a duplex, with a small yard. Here you can't really find anything liveable without total renovations for under $100,000. So it depends on where you live, how much your rent/mortgage is, how many kids do you have and can you COUPON? lol.

It completely depends on where you live... My fiancée and I make in the $60's without any assistance and we live like kings in this area. Our city's poverty rate is at 30%

I agree. It depends. Back before the kids were in school we were a one car family. We didnt eat out a lot because i was home with the kids and he had a more stable work schedule so he packed a lunch. In those days, we did. I think we were 28K - 38K. The next promotion put us over 42 K. But we have done it. We couldnt do it and maintain our current life now.

Yeah, I'm between 30-40k. I dont get CS or welfare. Its not that hard, the cost of living where I am isnt too high. For example, my apartment is about 1000 sq ft and my electric bill has never been over $100 or my gas over $35. Now, when I buy a house I'll need to he making more because although what I pay in rent will cover the mortgage and insurance, I will have HOA fees to deal with.

I used to make under 20,000 a year and barely made it with food stamps. Now I make in the mid thirties and in this area I live pretty comfortably.

In my area you could easily live off of that with no assistance.
